Babou

Ever since his first individual exposition in 1971, Babou has constructed a silent and exacting form of painting based on the essential relations of color and design. The canvas is treated with often cold flat wash colors whose range is deliberately limited and whose design is rigorously conceived in advance. These strict conditions have been applied to all of the subjects that the artist has done in a series : Prestige Residences, Architectural Ornaments, Adventure Playground, Hobble, Provencal Country House, Walled Towns. The object is always defined by its color or chromatic value, as Babou’s principal interest is in the formal qualities of painting. His works aim less at clarity than sensuality, the harmony that is constructed with light, the vibration which becomes, in the field of vision, the incarnation of painting itself.
